Animism is the belief that everything has a spirit. It is often associated with Aristotle because he believed that everything had a soul, or psyche, that made them alive. John Lovelock also created the theory that the ecosystem is alive to some degree, also known as Gaia. It is believed that both manufatured and natural objects have a spirit. The force behind all life is known as "mana," or mysterious power. Another belief of animism is that the souls of the deceased remain in other objects, living and inanimate. Ancestors watch over from the spirit world so they must be respected and they can be contacted.
